Grand Theft Auto IV was banned in Thailand after a teenager confessed to murdering a taxicab driver. The 18 year old high school student is accused of stabbing the driver to death while trying to emulate a scene from the video game. New Era Interactive Media, the largest video game publisher in Thailand, has told retailers to immediately stop selling Grand Theft Auto IV and plans to replace it with another title in the near future.

Newspapers in Thailand report that the teen was arrested while attempting to drive the taxi in reverse down a Bangkok street with the driver in the backseat. Bangkok police claim that the 18 year old confessed to killing the 54 year old driver after he tried to defend himself. If found guilty, the teen could face the death penalty. According to police Captain Veerarit Pipatanasak, the youngster wanted to known if robbing a taxi was as easy in reality as portrayed in the video game.

Thailand’s Culture Ministry has pushed hard to enforce more strict regulations on titles like Grand Theft Auto. The Ministry is going after tougher age ratings along with restrictions on how long these games can be played in arcades.
