A Poor Man’s Pandora Battery

The following “poor man’s” hardware guide to creating a Pandora Battery is aimed towards the non-handy man type. With that said you may potentially render your battery completely useless or cause another unforeseen disaster. Proceed with caution: (Thanks to James L for the guide.)

“Unfortunately, I didn’t have the essential tools and the soldering iron didn’t seem to want to work (possibly because it had solder on it). So I found a small way around using the “essential tools”. All you need is something that’s small enough to fit under the pin, a cutting utensil, and optionally, tape. Non-conductive tape, so NO DUCT TAPE!

Just pry open the battery by pinching the edges (with your teeth or something to that effect).

Once inside, this is optional, but I recommend it. Cut one of the batteries terminals, preferably, the one with a solid connection cable. One is solid, one is a flexible metal. Cutting the flexible one is fine, but it cause the battery to short, a problem I’m currently facing, every once in awhile, causing restarts. I’m guessing it’s because of the flexible material moving around inside the battery when the PSP is moved. Make sure to bend the metal GENTLY so that they cannot touch while you proceed.

Then, using your pry tool, make sure to get it just under the right pin, as seen in the diagrams. Preferably, get something that can wedge diagonally in the pin, then twist it.

Tape the battery terminal back together if you cut it, once you’ve safely removed the pin.

Put the battery back together. Don’t worry, it won’t snap together, thus, more tape! Wrap tape, and yes, you CAN you duct tape here, around the battery to hold it together. Scotch tape is recommended, because it’s not bulky, so it doesn’t prevent the battery from going in smoothly.

And that’s all there is to it. I was going to attempt to make a switchable service battery (even though this is possible VIA software, but it would have been cool to have), but the pin broke COMPLETELY off. Oh well.”

Impaler’s PSX EBOOT Creator Updated

Impaler has once again updated his PSX EBOOT Creator. This new version features a [working] preview option and output window for error handling purposes. It’s no doubt the easiest way to create single and multi disc PSX/PSOne EBOOTs for Dark_Alex’s pops loader.

3.80 PSARDumper + KL4E/KL3E Decompressor Released

Although it’s likely to serve the average Joe no real purpose, PSARDumper marks a great achievement in the PSP hacking scene.

This current version dumps & decrypts PSP firmware 3.80. As well it decompresses the newly introduced compression algorithm called KL4E.

Email reports indicate the work of _HellDashX_, but I’m not certain — no readme, no details, etc… Props to whomever is responsible anyway.

To use: install as you would any normal piece of homebrew, copy the 3.80 fw update EBOOT.PBP to the root of your memory stick, then run PSARDumper.

PSP Custom Firmware 3.80 M33 in Development

An interesting thread started by Mathieulh indicates custom fw 3.80 M33 is in the works. Furthermore, the possibility of a 3rd generation PSP model could be under development too… Have a read:

While working on the future 3.80M33, we found a VERY interesting string in the IPL’s playload: “/kd/pspbtcnf_03g.bin”

For those who do not understand here is a bit of history:

since 2.71 and especially in 2.80, we could see a string refering to pspbtcnf_02g which suggested the support of a new hardware or at least of a new operative mode. Later with the slim release we found out that the slim’s codename was this infamous 02g (proably standing for second generation) and that it used the _02g modules as well as pspbtcnf_02g.bin. It means that they worked on slim firmware/kernel for months before the actual hardware was announced/released.

We believe it is the same with the 3rd generation hardware which they are now preparing for sure. Will it be yet another lighter (and pandora proof) psp or will it be the new psp phone? Time will tell..

Simple Reboot/Shutdown PRX for Custom Firmware 3.71 M33

Fadil changing things up a bit… Rather than sharing news, he’s making the news… Written by Fadil himself is a simple PRX module for preventing an accidental [official] firmware upgrade.

Copy Fadil’s “update_plugin.prx” to flash0:/vsh/module overwriting the original. Of course you should take proper precautions by creating a backup first. Once that is said and done, while hovering over the fw update icon, hold R-trigger and press X to shut down your PSP, or just X to reboot. Pretty simple, huh?

Access flash0 by toggling USB on/off under 3.71M33’s recovery console. And be careful!

CWCHEAT 0.2.0 Released!

Weltall spreading some holiday joy with a new release of CWCHEAT — the universal tool for cheating each and every PSone or PSOne title under POPS-emulation. And more!

Weltall’s changelog summary:

“As for the loading process now the drive is checked in a better way this should make startup faster while making it even more safer than before. This new way allowed also to make the checking for new disk automatic in loaders like irshell and usb loaders so it’s not needed anymore to use a combination to make it reload the database and disk id (the manual way will still be available in this release but will be removed if this new method will work fine).

Now the clock function will allow you to change up to 333/166 even in 3.71+ fws.

As for the latest big improvement: now the text for the various translations were all stored on a mysql database this allowed a better and faster generation of files needed to do translation so i was able to make all the various texts which were left before only in english translatable and will be same for the future text which will be added, even adding new languages or changing size of the various strings is extremely faster. As a side effect of this old translation files (.lng) are invalid now so you need to grab a new one from the language folder of the package and put it as cwcheat.lng in the folder /seplugins/cwcheat/.

For 3.71m33 users you should have at least 3.71m33-3 to be able to use cwcheat in the 3.71m33 series because of missing patches in the older firmwares. Users of older firmware versions (3.60, 3.52, 3.51, 3.40)
aren’t affected by this.”
